PURPOSE:To make it possible to reduce the necessary capacity of a memory to an extremely small size, by a method wherein the image signal from a TV camera is binarized, and the number of signals of a light part and that of a dark part are counted to successively store the number of signals counted. CONSTITUTION:Plate-shaped luminous flux is projected to the entire peripheral wall of a tunnel to form a ring-shaped illumination part on the surface of said peripheral wall and the image of said illumination part is picked up by a TV camera 3. The image signal outputted from the camera 3 is converted into a digital signal by an A/D converter 10 to be inputted to a comparator 12 and a threshold signal dividing the light and dark parts of an image is inputted to the comparator 12 from a reference signal generator 11. The comparator 12 outputs an L-level or H-level signal corresponding to each image signal. Next, a reversal detector 13 receives the signal of the comparator 12 to detect the reversal from L to H and that from H to L. Next, counter 14 receives the output signals of the comparator 12 and the detector 13 to count the number of a series of the same kind of signals to successively store the same in a memory 15. By this method, memory informations for regenerating the image can be reduced extremely and stored in the memory of a microcomputer.
