PURPOSE:To improve self discharge characteristics and to steadily retain the charged electric capacity over a long period of time by adding a specific ammonium salt as an essential ingredient to a battery. CONSTITUTION:Quaternary ammonium salt is added as an essential ingredient to a hydrogen secondary battery comprising a negative electrode made of a hydrogen absorbing alloy, a positive electrode, and an electrolyte made of alkali aqueous solution. A compound indicated in the formula is used as the quaternary ammonium salt. The quaternary ammonium salt is preferable to dissolve or uniformly disperse in the electrolyte, but may be spreaded on the positive electrode (nickel oxide electrode) or the negative electrode (hydrogen absorbing alloy electrode), or impregnate in a separator. In the formula, R<1>-R<4> show the same or different organic groups having the number of carbons of 2-24, X shows an n valent anion, and n shows the number of valences of an anion. |
