摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent magnetic recording characteristic by providing a magnetic layer contg. magnetic particles of a hexagonal barium ferrite having a specific value or above of the specific transmittance of a specific wavelength on a nonmagnetic base. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic recording medium is formed by providing the magnetic layer contg. the pulverized magnetic particles of the hexagonal barium ferrite on the nonmagnetic base. This magnetic layer is so formed that the specific transmittance T(800) per 1mum of the light of 800mum wavelength attains >=30%. The reason for specifying the transmittance T(800) of the light per 1mum of the magnetic layer to >=30% lies in that the ratio of the recording and reproducing output-to-noise exhibits a good value at the specific transmittance T(800) or above. The dispersibility is better as the transmittance of the light is larger with the same compsn. There is a correlation between the dispersion of the magnetic material of the hexagonal barium ferrite formed on the nonmagnetic base into the magnetic powder in the magnetic layer and the transmittance of the light. The magnetic recording medium having the excellent magnetic recording characteristics is thus obtd.
