PURPOSE:To decrease the useless retrieving frequency and to segment words at a comparatively high speed and with high efficiency, by giving the front retrieval to the following segmenting character string whose length is increased by a character in case the character string segmented from the head of a partial subject character string is not retrieved out of a dictionary. CONSTITUTION:The blocks 1-5 of a processor 12 show the functions of the processor 12 and can be obtained by programs. A word dictionary 6 is stored in a magnetic disk device, for example, and a partial subject character string storing part 8 stores a subject character string or the partial subject character string. Then the words if divided are excluded out of the subject or partial subject character string. A segmentation number (n) storing part 9 stores the segmentation number (n) and this number (n) designates the number of characters to be segmented from the head of the subject or partial subject character string. A control flag storing part 10 stores a control flag (g) to indicate execution of the completely coincident retrieval or the front coincident retrieval. Then the candidate words are stored in a candidate word storing part 11.
