PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF PETROLEUM SULFONATE

In a process of producing a petroleum sulfonate by contacting a substantially dry petroleum feedstock with sulfur trioxide, water is added as a reaction diluent in order to improve the fluidity and pumpability of the sulfonic acid product while obtaining comparable conversion of sulfur trioxide to sulfonate. The water is added prior to or during the sulfonation process such that amounts of from about 200 to about 5000 parts per million of petroleum feedstock, are present during sulfonation.
