PURPOSE:To read a picture with high accuracy by varying the state of illumination on the surface of an object, and drastically reducing the influence of shading in the titled device with simple constitution. CONSTITUTION:An illumination lens 3 and a projection lens 7 are disposed coaxially, and a light source 1 is disposed on the optical axis 10. An illumination means is constituted by the light source 1, a heat absorbing glass 2, the lens 3, and a light beam deflection means 4. The light beam from the source 1 transmits through the glass 2, is focused by the lens 3, deflected by the means 4, and made incident to the object 5. The means 4 is able to be drive by a driving means not shown in the figure to rotate around the optical axis 10. By virtue of the rotation of the means 4, the shading caused by the ununiformity of the source 1 is removed. As a result, an image pickup element 8 can read a picture accurately.
