913,820. Piston-rings. JOY MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 21, 1961 [Feb. 24, 1960], No. 6295/61. Class 122 (1). The wear characteristics of the piston-rings of the high-pressure stage of a multi-stage compressor are different from those of the pistonrings of the low-pressure stage so that substantially uniform wear of all the piston-rings is obtained during operation of the compressor. The rings of the high-pressure stage have a gleater hardness than those of the lowpressure stage. The rings may be of carbonaceous material and those of the high-pressure stage may be impregnated with synthetic resin. The rings 16, 18, Fig. 2, are segmental and are biased against the cylinder wall 2 of the compressor by spring-pressed plungers 4 as well as by the compressed fluid which leaks behind the rings. |
