A process for dyeing and printing cellulose-containing fibres with reactive dyestuffs to avoid "boil fading" is characterized by dyeing or printing in an alkaline medium in the presence of (a) salts of nitrated aromatic sulphonic acids and (b) small amounts of soluble salts of vanadium oxygen acids. The fibres may be cotton, viscose rayon, staple fibre, ramie or hemp while the reactive dyestuffs may be from the azo, anthraquinone or phthalocyanine series and may also contain complexed heavy metal ion. The reactive group should contain a substituent capable of reacting with a base; a mono-, di- or tri-halogen diazinyl and in particular a trichlorodiazinyl radical is preferred. Component (a) may be the ammonium or alkali metal salts and, in the printing process, the less soluble alkaline earth, copper or manganese salts of mono- and dinitro-benzene sulphonic acids while (b) may be the ammonium or alkali metal vanadates, preferably metavanadates. Preferred quantities are 5 to 10 parts by weight of (a) to 1000 parts by weight of colouring agent and between 0.05 and 0.001 by weight of (b), calculated on (a). Examples are given of dyeing and printing and numerous dyestuffs are listed.
