PURPOSE:To obtain a non-clipped smoothed waveform to improve the tone quality by detecting a continuous peak value of n-number of words and operating a peak value in accordance with preceding and succeeding data to shape the waveform if a clip waveform is detected. CONSTITUTION:A signal has the peak value detected by a peak detector 2, and the number of words of duration of the peak value is detected by an (n) word counter 3. Data Yt0 and Ytn+1 preceding and following the peak are stored in a memory 5. A calculating circuit 4 calculates a virtual peak value alpha and a time talpha of the peak in accordance with the value of the (n) word counter 3 and values stored in the memory 5. Said time talpha is used as the address to read out contents of a ROM 6. Prescribed peak waveform functions are stored in the ROM 6 and are selected and are supplied to the calculating circuit 4. The calculating circuit 4 adds a prescribed coefficient to the selected and supplied peak waveform function and supplies the result to an adder 7 as an interpolation function.
