IMPROVED PROCESS FOR PRODUCING PETROLEUM SULFONATES A process for producing petroleum sulfonates from a liquid hydrocarbon feedstock and gaseous sulfur trioxide. The sulfonation reactor product is a two-phase effluent, comprised of a hydrocarbon phase and a sludge phase. A sludge-free portion of the effluent containing substantially only the hydrocarbon phase is recycled to the reactor with the hydrocarbon feedstock while the effluent remainder containing the sludge phase and the excess unrecycled hydrocarbon phase is neutralized to recover the sulfonate product, which is utilized in a micellar system for tertiary oil recovery.
