PURPOSE:To prevent loosening of a printing ribbon near a printing head by maintaining the traveling length of the printing ribbon from one ribbon guide through a gap between the printing head and a platen to the other ribbon guide approximately constant irrespectively of the arranging position of the ribbon guide thereby switching the arranging position of the ribbon guide corresponding to the arranging position of the printing head. CONSTITUTION:When printing operation is performed, a cam follower 16 is removed from a release cam 12 by means of a drive shaft 13 thereby a printing head 9 and respective ribbon guides 28, 29 are moved integrally to the printing position and the using position shown by 2-dot chain lines through a supporting lever 15 and a supporting arm 8. The traveling portion 40a of a thermal transfer ribbon 40 between respective ribbon guides 28, 29 is moved to a platen 1 side while being held between respective ribbon guides 28, 29 and respective springs 45, 46 then guided by the printing head 9 and pressure contacted against a printing paper on a platen 1. Consequently, when the printing head 9 moves from the release position to the printing position, the length of the traveling portion 40a of the thermal transfer ribbon 40 between respective ribbon guides 28, 29 or the length of the traveling portion 40a from the right ribbon guide 29 through a gap between the printing head 9 and the platen 1 to the left ribbon guide 28 does not vary but maintained approximately constant.
