PURPOSE:To attain an easy and accurate writing job with use of a comparatively short tip knocking type lead pen by deciding automatically the presence or absence of the lead of said pen as well as the excessive extension of the lead and then exchanging automatically the pen having no lead with another one of the same type stored in a pen storing part. CONSTITUTION:A CPU 11 is kept waiting for a fixed time at and after the time point when a mechanical pencil is put on the surface of a recording paper 39 with the prescribed writing pressure. Then the CPU 11 checks the presence or absence of the lead of the pencil by the detecting signal VS of a position detector 22 by deciding whether the position detecting signal PH is lower or not by a prescribed amount alpha than the reference pen-down position signal PS in a pen-down state detected by the signal VS. When the presence of the lead or a writing action carried out first after the replacement of the pencil is decided, the CPU 11 checks an excessively extended state of the lead by deciding whether the signal PH is higher or not by a prescribed amount beta than the signal PS.
