PURPOSE:To obtain the titled element capable of preventing a generation of hydrogen gas, etc., by composing the titled element of an operating electrode, a counter electrode, electrochromic (EC) layers mounted on facing surfaces of the both electrodes respectively, and an electrolytic solution filled in between the both EC layers. CONSTITUTION:The indium tin oxide (ITO) layer 2 for the operating electrode is used as the operating electrode, and the ITO layer 3 for the counter electrode is used as the counter electrode respectively, the EC layers 4, 7 composed of polyaniline are formed on the ITO layer 2 for the operating electrode and the ITO layer 3 for the counter electrode respectively. Thus, when the EC layer 4 is colored, as the EC layer 7 placed on the ITO layer 3 for the counter electrode receives an electron, the generation of the hydrogen gas, etc., from an adjacency of the ITO layers 3 for the counter electrode is prevented, without concerning with a hydrogen ion in the electrolyte solution 6, whereby the titled element having the excellent display stability and a long shelf life is obtd. The exchange of the electron and the anion, etc., in the operating electrode 2 and the counter electrode 3 becomes substantially to a reverse reaction respectively.
