PURPOSE:An ameliorant of visceral function, containing phosphoenolpyruvic acid, a salt or derivative thereof and effective for recovery of dysfunction caused by oxygen deficiency of internal organs, particularly the kidney. CONSTITUTION:An ameliorant of visceral function containing phosphoenolpyruvic acid, a salt or derivative thereof expressed by the formula (R1, R2 and R3 are H, Na, 1-18C alkyl or 5-7C cycloalkyl; n is 0-6) as an active ingredient. Monosodium phosphoenolpyruvate.monohydrate (R1 is Na; R2 and R3 are H; n is 1) is particularly effective as the compound expressed by the formula. The compound expressed by the formula has improved cellular membrane permeability and is directly converted into a high-energy compound, e.g. adenosine triphosphate, etc., in cells to treat various diseases caused by deficiency thereof.
