PURPOSE:To accurately extract an outline information of an object whose image density is changed within the outline from a processed image signal by contracting the peripheral picture elements of the proposed outline points of the object and its background area. CONSTITUTION:The differential values of an input image in the X and Y directions are detected by differential parts 211, 213, the root of the sum of squares of these differential values is calculated by an arithmetic part 231, the obtained root is converted into a binary-code value by a binary-coding part 431, '1' is assigned to a picture element on a proposed object outline point having a large differential value, and the obtained value is stored in an image memory 251. A thinning part 253 thins an area based upon a picture element and an outline point connecting part 255 turns a picture element adjacent to a picture element of '1' to '1' and a picture element adjacent to a picture element of '0' to '0' to connect the disconnection of an outline. A background painting-out part 257 substitutes a picture element connected to the upper left corner of the image out of picture elements of '0' by '1' and a background area contracting part 259 substitutes picture elements adjacent to the picture elements of '0' by '0'. Consequently, information status indicating an area based upon the object divided by the outline is obtained from the image memory 251.
