PURPOSE:To obtain a processed result with high quality, by separating a bit of character information from a bit of input picture information before a halftone process, performing the halftone process on the bit of input picture information except the bit of character information, and prohibiting the halftone process for the bit of character information. CONSTITUTION:A picture processing unit 100 converts picture signals of three colors read by CCDs 7r, 7g, and 7b, to recording signals of a black BK, a yellow Y, a magenta M, and a cyan C. Respective data of the Y, the M, and the C outputted from an additive complementary color generation circuit 104 is supplied to a masking processing circuit 106. A gradation data stored at a buffer memory 108 receives the halftone process by a gradation processing circuit 109. The black data BK stored at the memory 108 is processed at a character processing circuit 120. A logical sum BK3 of the output data BK of the circuit 109, and the output data BK2 of the circuit 120, is impressed on a laser driver 112bk.
