PRODUCTION OF MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM

PURPOSE:To provide the titled medium having magnetic characteristics of extremely good orientation and surface characteristic without hindering the crystal growth of a magnetic recording layer by making effective use of a bias voltage and high-frequency power and averting the electrostatic charging and discharging of a substrate. CONSTITUTION:The vapor of a ferromagnetic material evaporated from an evaporating source 5 is ionized by the passage through a high-frequency coil (high-frequency electrode) 7. The surface of a rotary drum 4 made of a stainless steel is coated with an insulating layer 11 consisting of the stainless nitride formed by implantation of nitrogen ions and is further coated with an Al conductive layer 12 deposited and formed by a sputtering method thereon. Negative potential is applied to the conductive layer 12 by a constant voltage source 9 through a slip ring 10. As a result, the vapor of the ferromagnetic material ionized by the potential difference generated between the rotary drum 4 and the evaporating source 5 is accelerated and is brought into collision against the surface of a high-polymer film substrate passing along the surface of the drum 4 in a contact therewith, by which the vapor is deposited on the film substrate.
