PURPOSE:To form a magnetic recording medium having excellent weatherability by forming a compd. film which contains the carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms and contain titanium and oxygen having oxygen atoms of >=1.0 times the number of titanium atoms on a ferromagnetic metallic layer formed on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:This recording medium is constituted by forming the compd. film which contains at least the titanium (Ti) and oxygen (O) and contg. the carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms having O of >=1.0 times the ratio of the number of atom of the Ti. The into of the number of atoms of the Ti and O is good when the film contains the O at 1.0-3.0 times the Ti. The structure of the titanium oxide in the film is not obtainable if the O is <1.0 times and therefore the above-mentioned effect it no exhibited. The film is brittle and the powdering arises in some cases in the stage of film formation if the ratio exceeds 3.0 times. Such ratio is, therefore, undesirable. The protective film contg. the structure of bivalent-quadrivalent titanium oxide is thereby obtd. and therefore, the weatherability to conditions of corrosive gases or high temp. and high humidity is improved.
