Radio frequency signals between the machine tool control system and the remote control unit are carried by a link which is, pref. a single coaxial cable. The central processing unit of the control system is a digital computer for which programs are stored in a memory. The remote control unit includes a microcomputer to which the operator inputs commands using touch pad switches and a feedrate switch. A transceive logic circuit in the unit responds to digital signals from the microcomputer representative of say, coolant enable, machine start of stop commands.
