The invention relates to a mechanism for the removal of slabs on logs by breaking them up. It consists chiefly of a base 6 positioned upstream of the band saw 4, on which base there slides a tool-holding stand 7 holding a breaking-up tool 8 and its drive means 10. The breaking-up tool 8, arranged vertically, consists of a modular stack of blade-carrying discs driven at an adjustable speed in the direction of movement of the log 12.
