PURPOSE:To obtain a copolyarylate of excellent heat resistance, by reacting an aromatic diol with an aromatic polycarboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic diol (e.g., bisphenol A) is reacted with a tri- or tetra-basic aromatic polycarboxylic acid (e.g., terephthalic acid) and acetic anhydride at 100-160 deg.C and atmospheric pressure for 1-8hr in an inert atmosphere and further reacted at 150-300 deg.C for 1-8hr. The obtained prepolymer is polycondensed at 180-400 deg.C for 1-8hr in a vacuum of 0.01-1Torr for 1-10hr to obtain a copolyarylate consisting of structural units of formulas I and II (wherein Ar is a bi- to tri-valent aromatic group, R1 is a group of formula III, R2-3 are each a 1-8C alkylene, a 1-8C alkylidene, a 6-8C arylene, a 9C or lower cycloalkylene, a 9C or lower cycloalkylidene, OS, SO, SO2 or CO, p, q, l and n are each 0 or 1, and m is 2 or 3), said structural units of formulas I and II being arranged at random in a molar ratio of 9999:1-9800:200 and having an intrinsic viscosity >=0.5.
