The subject of the present invention is a vehicle steering system in which the steering column 9 is rotationally securely fastened to a cam 8 acting on a piston 3 which can move in a cylinder 1 against elastic means 7 and pressure means dependent on the speed of the vehicle. According to the invention, this steering system comprises a reservoir of liquid 24 communicating with the inside 11 of the cylinder 1, on the side opposite the face of the piston 3 on which the cam 8 acts, on the one hand via one-way means 25a, 26, 27 allowing free circulation of the liquid from the tank 24 to the cylinder 1, but preventing it in the opposite direction, and on the other hand via a return circuit comprising a restriction 13-10a and means for modifying this restriction according to the speed of the vehicle. <IMAGE>
