PURPOSE:To execute the pattern discrimination of a document image at high speed and at low cost by reading out a bit train from an image data, and calculating a parameter by counting the number of black or white picture elements and the number of runs. CONSTITUTION:A picture element counter 12 reads out each bit train in the horizontal direction of an image data from a buffer 11 and counts the number of black picture elements. Also, a bit checker 13 detects a black run flag in the lateral direction and the longitudinal direction at every bit, and the number of black runs is counted by a run counter 14. A shape parameter determining device 15 calculates the parameter of stroke width from the number of black picture elements and the number of black runs and outputs it to a discriminator 16. The discriminator 16 determines to which feature pattern of a document image shown by a back-ground, black, a thick line, a thin line, and a net point, the object image belongs, from an input parameter, and outputs its result. In this way, the pattern discrimination of the character image can be executed at the high speed and at the low cost.
