PURPOSE:To lighten the burden of an operator and to shorten necessary time by detecting the presence/absence or a ringer when a hook-switch is turned on and setting it automatically to a transmitting mode or a receiving mode. CONSTITUTION:When the operator of transmission side hooks off a receiver and calls a called person, there is no ringer and a hook-switch is turned on, and accordingly, its own terminal is stored as transmission side. Then, the telephone set of called terminal sounds and becomes the wating state of operation of the operator. When the operator of called terminal hooks up a handset, it is judged that the hook-switch is turned on at the time of ringer detection in a MODEM of called terminal, and stored it as receiving side, and at the same time, an answer back tone is sent out. On hearing the answer back tone, the operator of transmission side depresses a data communication button 19 and hooks off a receiver, and the operator of called side hooks off the handset when the telephone set sounds, and depresses the button 9 for data communication and then, returns the transmitter-receiver to original position.
