Constructed between the underside of a magnet (16) and the inside of the bottom strand (36) of a discharge (delivery) belt (18) of a magnetic grader (12) is an air cushion which is bounded, for example, by a bellows (38). Owing to the construction of the air cushion, the discharge belt (18) "floats" on the underside of the magnet (16), with the result that the friction between the magnet (16) and the discharge belt (18) is greatly reduced. This has, on the one hand, the advantage that a lower power suffices to drive the discharge belt (18) and, on the other hand, that wear of the discharge belt (18) is strongly reduced, since there is a reduction in the attractive force between the magnet and iron parts occurring from the flow (40) of material on the underside of the discharge belt (18). <IMAGE>
