The invention relates to a gasket for sealing off static surfaces, in particular a flange gasket, for pipework and apparatus construction and to a method for its manufacture. In order to create a gasket of the type stated at the outset and to propose a method for its manufacture, which gasket is not only simple to manufacture and install but furthermore has a high sealing efficiency and a comparatively long service life and which method is simple to carry out, it is proposed, according to the invention, that the said gasket consist of an upper and a lower sheet (1, 2) of a vulcanised elastomer, preferably natural rubber, and a perforated hard plate (3) between the said sheets. The perforated hard plate (3) is composed of high-grade steel. The perforations (4) in the hard plate (3) are produced by punching. The diameter of the perforations (4) in the hard plate (3) and their arrangement relative to one another are chosen so that the two sheets (1, 2) of elastomer are firmly connected. <IMAGE>
