A drafting machine consists of a plurality of workstations, in each of which a thread is drawn off from a feed bobbin by means of a delivery unit and galettes and is fed to a ring spindle. The drive motors of the delivery unit and of the galettes are coupled to a control unit. By means of the control unit, the preliminary draft and the main draft are adjustable between the delivery unit and the galettes. During the starting phase of the drafting machine, the preliminary draft is set at an increased value exceeding the operating value, whilst at the same time the thread thereby conveyed is separated out as waste. The preliminary draft is subsequently set at the desired operating value. Before the start of the drafting machine, the drive motors are brought into a position of readiness, in which they do not yet quite rotate. When this limitation is cancelled, the drive motors begin to rotate simultaneously. Likewise before the start of the drafting machine, the thread is tensioned between the delivery unit and the galettes.
