An apparatus for closing a succession of partly disengaged slide fastener coupling element chains (C) with sliders (S) mounted respectively thereon includes an element-engaging block assembly (16) having a guide channel (16a) for constrictingly receiving a disengaged portion (E) of each coupling element chain (C) to close the same. The assembly (16) includes a movable element-engaging block (13) reciprocably movable toward and away from a stationary element-engaging block (11) to selectively define therebetween the guide channel (16a) in timed relation to detection by a sensor of an element-free space (G) between the successive chains (C) and the slider (S).
