The invention provides an electrochemical cell 10 having a cell housing 12 divided by a separator 20 into two electrode compartments for an anode substance 40 and a cathode substance 38 and electrolyte 36. The separator is compression sealed to the housing to separate the electrode compartments from each other, by compression seals 44, 48. Each compression seal comprises a close-wound radially resilient metal spring and a sealing strip of ductile metal, which is backed by the spring. The spring is radially stressed by a force sufficient resiliently radially to compress the spring and sufficient to cause plastic deformation of the sealing strip. The invention also provides a housing for such a cell and a method of sealing the separator to the cell to the housing. <IMAGE> |
