A compound which, when used as a component of a liquid crystal composition, has an effectiveness of notably reducing the viscosity and the operating voltage of the resulting liquid crystal composition, and a liquid crystal composition containing the same are provided, which compound is a cyclohexane derivative expressed by the formula <IMAGE> wherein R represents hydrogen atom or an alkyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms.
