NEW MATERIAL:2-Phenylpyridine derivative of formula 1 (R1 is 1-12C straight- chain alkyl; R2 is identical or different from R1 and 1-12C straight-chain alkyl). EXAMPLE:2-(4-Pentanoyloxyphenyl)-5-pentylpyridine. USE:A liquid crystal compound constituting a liquid crystal composition for electrooptical displays. PREPARATION:Dimethyl sulfate is allowed to react with p-bromophenol of formula 2 in an aqueous solution to form 4-methoxybromophenol of formula 3, which is allowed to react with butyl lithium to give a compound of formula 4. The product is permitted to react with pyridine to give a compound of formula 5. Further, 1-bromoalkane is made to act to give a compound of formula 6, which is hydrolyzed to give a compound of formula 7. The reaction of the product with hydrogen bromide gives a compound of formula 8, which is finally allowed to react with an acyl chloride to give the compound of formula 1.
