PURPOSE:To dehydrogenate 2-propanol advantageously and to hydrogenate a carbon-carbon bond-containing compound, by irradiating the alcohol by the use of a metallic chloride compound of 8 group optionally in the presence of the unsaturated compound with light rays. CONSTITUTION:(a) 2-Propanol or (b) a mixture of 2-propanol and a carbon- carbon unsaturated bond-containing compound is irradiated with light rays in the presence of a metallic chloride compound of 8 group and 2-propanol is dehydrogenated to give acetone at normal temperature at normal pressure by one stage. Further in the case of b, hydrogen formed in the dehydrogenation reaction is used, the unsaturated compound can be hydrogenated in situ to shown improved hydrogen transfer reaction effects. In the case of a, a chlorine compound of Ru, Os or Ir such as RuCl3.XH2O, OsCl3, IrCl3, etc., is preferable as the catalyst and in the case of b, a chlorine compound of Rh, Ru, Os or Pt such as RhCl3.3H2O, RuCl3.XH2O, OsCl3, H2PtCl6.6H2O, etc., are preferable as the catalyst. |
