PURPOSE:To produce the titled substance in high yield with few problems such as waste water treatment, by reacting acetone with 2,2,4,4,6-pentamethyl-2,3,4,5- tetrahydropyrimidine in the presence of a benzyl halide. CONSTITUTION:The titled substance is produced by reacting 1mol of 2,2,4,4,6- pentamethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimidine with 3-15mol of acetone in the presence of a benzyl halide (e.g. benzyl chloride, benzyl bromide, etc.) as a catalyst at >=30 deg.C for 1-20hr. The amount of the catalyst is 0.05-10wt% of the compound of formula. The reaction may be carried out in the copresence of a cocatalyst such as bromine, iodine, sodium bromide, ammonium chloride, activated carbon, etc., at an amount of 0.1-5wt% of the compound of formula. USE:Raw material for photostabilizer of polymers and intermediate for pharmaceuticals.
