PURPOSE:To feed a sheet under a light load without causing contamination by stopping the sheet by means of a stopper roller while simultaneously separating a separation roller from a feed roller when the sheet has arrived to the contacting section between a resist roller and a pressure contact roller thereby flexed. CONSTITUTION:As a motor 27 rotates, a feed roller 33 and a pickup roller 47 rotate in the paper feed direction while a separation roller 31 rotates in the reverse direction thus feeding a document P placed on a tray 7. When the tip of the document P is detected by means of a sensor S2, a solenoid 52 is excited reversely so as to lift the pickup roller 47. While when the tip of the document P is detected by means of a sensor S3, the tip of the document P is contacted against the contacting section between a resist roller 51 and a pressure contact roller 54. When a predetermined time has elapsed, the motor 27 is stopped while a solenoid 32 is excited to lower a stop roller 26 so as to pressure contact the document P against a guide 23 while simultaneously separate the separation roller 31 from the feed roller 33.
