PURPOSE:To easily move a protective cover of an opening part for inserting a magnetic head, by constituting the titled device so that a magnetic head moves in the width direction to a position where it does not obstruct an insertion of a cartridge, in a state that the cartridge is not inserted. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic head 6 is supported so as to be movable in the width direction of a tape 4, and in a state that a cartridge 1 is not contained yet, the magnetic head 6 moves in the width direction of the tape 4 to a position where it is not opposed to the cartridge 1. In a process in which the tape cartridge is inserted, the magnetic head 6 descends to a position of an alternate long and two short dashes line, and also, to a position where it is not opposed to the cartridge. After the cartridge has been inserted into the position of the alternate long and two short dashes line, first the magnetic head 6 ascends to a position opposed to the tape 4 by interlocking with an operation for closing a door. By interlocking with an operation for closing the door thereafter, the cartridge 1 moves to a recording and reproducing position indicated with a full line from a position of the alternate long and two short dashes line, and the magnetic head 6 also moves to the tape side and adheres closely to the tape. In this way, the movement of a protective cover 11 is not obstructed by the magnetic head.
