PURPOSE:To improve the transmission speed and to reduce the memory capacity by coding a character position and adding it to a character code X to express a character code Y when the character code Y corresponding to the character code X exists in n characters in succession to the code X. CONSTITUTION:A memory 2 has a part 21 storing a character code corresponding list where a character code Y corresponding to a character code X is decided, a character data storage area 22 of n characters to be coded, and a compression/reproduction work area 23 of character data. A CPU 1 inputs the i-th - (i+n-1)th character data to store each character and character location. Then the character code corresponding list is referred to check whether or not the conversion character of the i-th character exists in the successive (i+n-1)th character, the excluding processing of the character coded already is applied and if two converted characters or over exist, a location code is generated.
