PURPOSE:To obtain a CCD solid-state image pickup element having a low con sumed power, simple in construction, operating at high speed and having a large dynamic range by providing the first shift register for driving an odd (even) number vertical scanning line and the second shift register for driving an even (odd) number vertical scanning line in the same side of an image pickup area. CONSTITUTION:The first shift register 1a has the construction in which an output inverter OI and a connection inverter CI by a connection switch CS or CS' and the output contact of the output inverter OI is connected to the odd (even) number vertical scanning line (for instance, Z). Similarly, the second shift register 1b has the construction in which an output inverter OI' is connected to the even (odd) number vertical scanning line (for instance Y). In this case, the first shift register 1a and the second shift register 1b are disposed at the same side of the image pickup area.
