PURPOSE:To allow causes for undefined codes to be transmitted from a host unit due to a programming error to be easily detected and prevent a faulty operation of a compatible printer by providing an undefined code detection code and a display means to display the contents of said codes. CONSTITUTION:A defined code to be input from a host unit 5 is entered into an undefined code detection circuit and then whether a defined code is a normal definition code or an undefined code is determined. If it is a normal definition code, it is sent to a printer control circuit 2 as usual. However, if it is determined as an undefined code, a buzzer 3 sounds for a short time through a detection signal to be output from the undefined code detection circuit 1, and a printer is set to a reception-disable state by a printer control circuit 2. Further, the contents of the undefined code is displaced at a display unit 4.
