PURPOSE:To allow the operator at the reception side to recognize information relating to variable magnification executed at transmission/reception while having only to observe a recording picture by sending the information relating to the variable magnification processing together with a magnified original picture as picture information. CONSTITUTION:A read section 1 consisting of a CCD line sensor uses a control section 3, which controls to read and original picture one prescribed scanning line each and sends the result to a reduction section 2 as white/black binary dot data. The reduction section 2 interleaves the dot data of inputted picture to reduce the picture at a prescribed ratio and outputs the result to the control section 3. The outputted picture data is sent to a telephone line or the like via a MODEM 4 sequentially from the control section 3. Further, the control section 3 calls the dot data relating to the ratio of reduction from a character generator 5 and adds it to a prescribed location of the original picture as the picture information and sends the result. The operator at the reception side can recognize the change in the magnification by the added data.
