PURPOSE:To obtain the titled synthetic resin material of which the color is reversibly changed from colorless state to brown or the like through the action of ultraviolet rays, applying a soln. contg. particular two kinds of viologen compds. and a soluble resin on a synthetic resin base material and then coating the base material with a curable material. CONSTITUTION:At least one viologen compd. of each of formulae I and II (wherein R is a 1-20C alkyl or benzyl; and X is a monovalent anion) (e.g., compds. of formulae III and IV) and a soluble resin (e.g., polyvinyl alcohol) are dissolved in a solvent such as water or alcohol. The soln. thus obtd. is applied on a synthetic resin base material (e.g., polymethyl methacrylate), followed by drying. The layer thus formed is coated with a curable material (e.g., methyltrimethoxysilane), followed by curing, thereby obtaining an intended photochromic synthetic resin material. The synthetic resin material exhibits excellent dimming properties and is suitable for use as a material for an optical filter, etc.
