PURPOSE:To enable line printing of an arbitrary document containing second- level characters and external characters to be performed and enable a normal operation to be secured for a long time with a battery as a power source, by effectively utilizing a floppy disk drive and replacing floppy disks at most two times according to a displayed prompting message for inserting an exclusive floppy disk, in the execution of printing. CONSTITUTION:When executing printing, it is discriminated whether a character code to be pattern-developed is the one for an external character or the one for a second-level character. When the character code to be expanded is an external character code, a prompting message for loading a floppy disk for storing external characters is displayed. When the character code to be expanded is a second-level character code, a prompting message for loading a floppy disk for storing second-level characters is displayed. After the loading of an exclusive floppy disk according to the displayed prompting message is confirmed, a floppy disk drive is started to control the access to the floppy disk loaded therein.
