PURPOSE:To provide a medium having an excellent reading-out characteristic by specifying the refractive index of a 1st dielectric layer to >=2, forming a magnetic layer of an amorphous alloy contg. a rare earth element and an iron family element and forming the magnetic layer to the film thickness within a specific range. CONSTITUTION:The refractive index of the 1st dielectric layer 5 of the medium for a photomagnetic memory having the multi-layered structure constituted by successively forming the 1st dielectric layer 2, the magnetic layer 3, the 2nd dielectric layer 4 and a reflective layer 5 on a transparent substrate 1 disposed in an incident side of light is >=2 and the magnetic layer 3 is formed of the amorphous alloy contg. the rare earth element and an iron family element; in addition the film thickness of the magnetic layer 3 is in a 350-440Angstrom range. The photomagnetic memory medium having the good reading out characteristic equiv. to or better than the reading-out characteristic of a medium [for example, G.N. Connell: Appl. Phys. Lett. 40 (1982) 212] is thus obtd. by using the relatively thick magnetic layer which can provide high reliability as the recording medium.
