PURPOSE:To miniaturize a reader by constituting it so that a read only optical card provided with an optical waveguide layer, and an optical coupler for coupling a read-out light can be read by scanning a laser beam without moving the card. CONSTITUTION:The reader is constituted by providing a semiconductor laser 20, a hologram disk 21 which is driven to rotate by a motor 22, and a photodetector 26, a light beam from the semiconductor laser 20 is scanned so as to be made incident on the photocoupler 24 of an optical card 23 by the hologram disk 21, its light is propagated along the waveguide layer of a storage area 25, and a data bit is projected, and a signal light from its data bit is detected by the photodetector 26, by which information can be read. In this way, in a state that the optical card remains at a standstill, its storage information can be read, therefore, the mobile mechanism of the card is not required and the reader can be miniaturized.
