PURPOSE:To make it possible to eliminate a deashing process in the polymerization of an olefin and to decrease the inactivation of catalyst with the lapse of polymerization time to an extent smaller then that to which a conventional catalyst is inactivated, by using a catalyst formed by combining a specified titanium-containing solid catalyst component with a substituted piperidine derivative and an organoaluminum compound. CONSTITUTION:This catalyst for the polymerization of an olefin is prepared by combining the following three components A through C. (A): a solid catalyst component obtained by contacting a product obtained by copulverizing a substance (a) obtained by reacting a powder of metallic magnesium with at least 2mol, per mol of the powder, of an alkyl monohalide in the absence of any solvent in the presence of iodine with a phthalic diester (b) and titanium tetrachloride (c) at a low temperature with titanium tetrachloride in the presence of a normally liquid aromatic hydrocarbon or aromatic halohydrocarbon (d), (B): a disubstituted or tetrasubstituted piperidine derivative of the formula (wherein R<1>-R<4> are each H or an alkyl which may have a substituent), and (C): an organoaluminum compound. |
