PURPOSE:To continuously produce the titled compound in high purity, by dissolving 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene and a catalyst in a lower aliphatic moncarboxylic acid, continuously supplying the obtained solution to an oxidation reaction tank and separating the titled compound and the catalyst from the reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:A raw material dissolution tank 3 is supplied with 2,6- diisopropylnaphthalene 1 and with a mixture 2 of a lower aliphatic monocarboxylic acid and a catalyst composed of a soluble Co salt, a soluble Mn salt and a bromine compound. The obtained solution is continuously supplied to an oxidation reaction tank 5 and oxidized with molecular oxygen 6. The oxidation product is flashed 12 to separate 13 solid component from the produced objective material, sent to a catalyst extraction tank 16 to extract the catalyst with a mineral acid 17 and subjected to solid-liquid separation to obtain crude 2,6-naphthalene-dicarboxylic acid, which is subjected to salting-out 20, acid precipitation 25 and drying 28 to obtain high-purity objective compound. The Co and Mn existing in the extraction filtrate discharged from a solid-liquid separator 18 is recovered in the form of (basic) carbonate and recycled to the raw material dissolution tank 3.
