Process for recovery of wool from products or by-products of the wool industries and of the leather and tanning industries, comprising keratinous fibres attached to fat-impregnated collagen tissues. The process consists a in bringing the products into contact with an aqueous bath combining, on the one hand, a cationic surfactant in an acidic medium, in particular an amphoteric surfactant capable of becoming cationic in acidic medium, on the other hand, an acid in low concentration, b in heating the whole to bring it to a temperature of between 50 and 130 DEG C, in particular of the order of 80 DEG to 120 DEG C, c in keeping the whole at this temperature until the collagen and fatty portions have dissolved, and in then separating the fibrous matter from the bath, finally d after separation, preferably in ensuring washing of the said fibrous matter by means of an aqueous washing, particularly basic, solution. The process of the invention makes it possible to obtain marketable keratinous fibres whose textile quality is not damaged or denatured. In addition, the collagen products can be subsequently reclaimed.
