A tenter clip comprises a base II having a clamping area 18; a bracket 12 having a boss 30; arms 13,14 on the bracket 12 and overlying the area 18; a movable jaw 15 provided with an operating arm 20 and hinged to a pintel 16 so as to be normally free to move under gravity to clamp the fabric to be tentered against the area 18; and adjustable means between the boss 30 and the jaw 15 to assist in moving the jaw 15 into clamping position. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 5, the jaw 15 is provided with a fabric-engaging edge 5. A compression spring 36 extends between a recess 44 in a screw 33 mounted in the boss 30 and a projection 32 on the jaw 15. The spring 36 urges the jaw 15 into the clamping position when a cam (not shown) releases the arm 20. A nut 34 is mounted on the screw 33 to lock this screw in adjusted position in the boss 30. In a modification, Fig. 9, a gate 2B having a shoe face 27B terminating in an arcuate surface 6B is pivoted at 3B to the jaw 15B so that the gate 2B engages the area 18B in a toggle joint action. The heel 29B of the gate 2B is weighted to normally hang downwards. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, a permanent magnet or a magnetically attractive plate 50 is locked in an adjusted position in the boss 30A by a nut 52. A permanent magnet 56 and a non-magnetic collar 60 are secured by a screw 61 to the operating arm 20A. When the arm 20A is released the magnet 56 is attracted towards the magnet or plate 50 but the two do not engage. A gripping blade 5A is provided on the jaw 15. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the fabric is gripped by a gate 2C similar to the gate 2B shown in Fig. 9.
