A steering aid for motor vehicles has a drive unit which assists the manual steering, is operated by an electric motor and acts on a linkage part, influencing the steering angle, in a sense appropriate for the manual steering. The drive unit can only be switched on by a speed-dependent switching device at low travelling speeds and can be switched off when a certain travelling speed is exceeded, and the switching on and off of the drive unit can be controlled as a function of the torque applied manually to the steering wheel. Separate gripping points on the steering wheel are arranged such that they can move with respect to the supporting steering-wheel body, in the circumferential direction counter to spring force, and their ends are constructed as electrical contacts which cooperate with counter-contacts at the adjacent points of the steering wheel in such a manner that, when the contacts are closed due to the spring resistance being overcome when a certain torque is exerted on the steering wheel, the drive unit is switched on and, when the contacts are open, it is switched off.
