Phenolic resin foams, for use in thermal insulation of buildings, packaging and soft furniture, are made by reaction of a liq. phenolic resol with a strong acid as hardener, in presence of at least 20% finely-divided solid with particle size 0.5-800 microns, dispersed uniformly in the mixt., and in presence of a cpd. with active H atoms, e.g. an ether diol, at not above 85 deg.C.
