Each laying cage (A, B, C...) has three or four levels. The eggs from each level (1 to 4) are transported one at a time to the ends of the rows. At the ends of the rows are columns (6) which support (7) the output transport belt (5) on a frame (9). The frame is raised or lowered to each of the levels in turn. At the end of each cage transporter, at each level, the eggs are counted (8a,8b...) and are carried along the transporter belt (5). Deflection bars (11a,11b...) prevent the eggs from being counted twice. The counters work on a photo-electric principle.
